It’s easy to forget — even for a Disney nerd like myself — that before Walt Disney died of lung cancer in December of 1966, EPCOT (the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow) was supposed to be a real city. The code name “Project X” was given to the undertaking that would eventually become Walt Disney World, which today includes the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and the Animal Kingdom parks.

Fascinating. And the rabbit hole goes deeper still.

“In five years I don’t think there’ll be a reason to have a tablet anymore. Maybe a big screen in your workspace, but not a tablet as such. Tablets themselves are not a good business model.”

- BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins during an interview at the Milken Institute conference in Los Angeles yesterday.

Oh boy. Heins may want to check with Apple on their tablet business, because it sure seems like a good model.

There are some quotes that I’m pretty sure will come back to bite someone in the ass. This one I’m sure about.

I’ll make my own prediction: In five years, tablets will be an exponentially bigger business than BlackBerry, because BlackBerry will no longer exist.

A Night in Sweden’s Treehotel

In a remote part of Swedish Lapland, tucked away in a forest just south of the Arctic Circle, are the most stylish tree houses in the world. The Treehotel in Harads, Sweden, has five unique “treerooms” all elevated 4-6 meters above ground: The Cabin, The Mirrorcube, The Bird’s Nest, The Blue Cone, and The UFO. Each room was designed by one of Scandinavia’s leading architects with custom-designed furniture, lighting, and fabrics.

That coffee you’re drinking while gazing at your iPad? It cost more than all the electricity needed to run those games, emails, videos and news stories for a year.

The annual cost to charge an iPad is just $1.36, according to the Electric Power Research Institute, a non-profit research and development group funded by electric utilities.

By comparison, a 60-watt compact fluorescent bulb costs $1.61, a desktop PC adds up to $28.21 and a refrigerator runs you $65.72.
